Alyson Williams

It is ironic that she went to Manchester Grammar with the Pankhurst girls, all destined to change the world in favour of women – or more so to ensure the basic rights of women and the plight of poor families in the East End of London were addressed legally and fairly.

Carrie Morrison was one strong female and every girl, and boy, should know about her! …

PRAISE FOR BEATRICE SHILLING –

A GIRL WITH GRIT & A DAME WITH DETERMINATION

A word from David Woodford, Beatrice’s nephew who has just read the book.

A well-researched record telling how one young girl was determined to follow her dream and succeed in a male dominated world. An encouragement for all girls so inclined to pursue a STEM career.” 18th February 2021

Women have always been powerful, but men tended to write history and forget about the contribution females made to our world. Determination is what kept them going and Beatrice certainly showed what women can do in man’s world. She is amazing – from racing cars and bikes to saving the lives of our airmen in WWII. …

Men have a lot to answer for, then and now! …

What a great way to introduce Beatrice to those girls who are usually interested in famous celebrities and the clothes they wear! …

The males of this world should read it, too. They might enjoy ‘Hacking the BBC website’ for fun!

As a stay-at-home Dad, I have been reading this to my 10 year old twins each day. I am enjoying the history being revealed about Beatrice – new to me – while my son and daughter are asking lots of questions about different aspects brought up in the book. I had to search the garage for a washer! …

Good luck, Jessica, in whatever you do later in life. I hope your dreams come true to ride your Norton while working in musical theatre, computing, modelling or hosting Blue Peter. Make sure you go to University first and get a degree behind you like Beatrice.

Bill Y Dad to Josh & Willow

I’m reading Beatrice for pleasure and to catch up with what is going on in the world for teenagers, before passing it on to my family. What an amazing girl Jessica is – how can she do so much at her age? Beatrice was also incredible and can teach us all a few things about life being unfair, 100 years ago and now! I need to catch up on STEM, equality for women and what the young must do towards their future! …

Written in a very gossipy manner with Jessica narrating, there are very sound and sometimes amusing links between the girls; their love of bikes and the need to succeed, but also their differences. Beatrice dressed for comfort while Jessica just adores clothes. Amazing photographs of both females supplement the text which goes a long way to showing how both girls work exhaustingly hard to gain the success they seek. …

It is essential for todays ‘Tweens and Teens’.

The superb photographs, tales of family life and excellent text make it a comfortable read, pulling you in without being too heavy on the history side, yet gets several messages across.

Equality for all is essential, but importantly you can succeed with determination, hard work and building on those first steps. …

My girls are extremely interested in the latest fashion – Stella McCartney for starters. Famous women, gender issues and equality for all, especially in the world of STEM all scratch an itch or two. …

I have not found any others books on Beatrice suitable for the 10 – 16 year group. In fact, I have not found any of this ilk!

UPDATE APRIL 2023 A student at Swansea e-mailed me and said the following: My essay on Beatrice was marked and awarded a first, and I was encouraged to consider studying Beatrice further and perhaps basing my dissertation on her. I used the Dame version, and found it exceedingly helpful – thank you again, I couldn’t have got a first without it! Imogen G.

To those who read, reviewed, offered advice and provided detailed comments about the book, thank you so much.

You are amazing!

PRAISE FOR ELSIE’S SKIPPING BOOK

Praise for Traditional Skipping Songs with Jessica and Grandma shows how impressed teachers, coaches and fitness gurus found the book. Read their reviews, please.

Skipping is the ultimate fun, high intensity workout with many proven health benefits for all ages and abilities. This brilliant little book has captured a whole range of traditional skipping songs. Many of the rhymes are unusual (almost forgotten in the mists of time!). The author has also delved into the origin and history when relevant. This book would be particularly suitable as an aide for teaching primary aged children skipping in the playground and as part of the P.E. curriculum. A great warm-up prior to football and rugby for all ages. A must-have-resource for teachers, coaches and parents!

A. Jones, Head Teacher & Football Coach (Hampshire)

The rhymes are perfect for the playground or a P.E. lesson. Children love the old rhymes especially if their parents or grandparents used them. The stories behind the rhymes are popular, the gorier the better!

L.H. Primary School Teacher (Gosport Hampshire)

What a superb skipping book to teach the children of today how to skip! It’s great to have the historical links and meanings behind the traditional skipping rhymes which can now be passed on from one generation to the next! Help with selecting ropes, advice on exercises to aid skippers and suggestions for healthy snacks add to the book. Real life photographs throughout show the children actually doing the skipping, too. The You Tube channel with demonstrations is a fabulous added extra to support the teaching of the skipping steps – great idea. I will certainly be using it to teach my class of future Olympic winning skippers!

OFSTED WILL LOVE SEEING IT IN ACTION!

Elijah skipping in Ireland!

This book is a great way of using traditional rhymes and skipping to get children involved in exercise and physical activity. It allows students to learn the music and the rhymes whilst performing physical activity either individually or in pairs/groups. The rhymes have great cross curricular links to history, English, geography and various cultural influences from not only the U.K but other countries around the world. The rhymes and exercises could be used either as a warm up/cool down or as part of a main lesson too.

Mr J. Cook- Curriculum Leader of Physical Education Secondary School (Southampton)

The attached history extras are a brilliant addition, particularly useful with older children. This ticks so many educational boxes, it’s fun and very purposeful in today’s multi-cultural society.

E.D. Primary School Teacher (Portsmouth Hampshire)

An excellent idea to bring the younger generation into line with our lives when we were younger. This reminded me in many ways of my childhood and evoked happy memories playing in the street with no traffic. I will certainly share this book with my granddaughter.

JB Primary School Teacher & Grandparent (Hampshire)

Many thanks to the experts above who have read the book, tried out some of the exercises and rhymes as well as provided advice. Much thanks also go to Terri Bryant from Body Focus (www.bodyfocus.org.uk) and to Hannah Attenburrow at Beyond the Mud (www.beyondthemud.co.uk).  Your advice has been invaluable.

I am eternally grateful for your support.
