ELSIE O’NEILL’S BOOKS!

A bit about Elsie …

Elsie is, by birth, an Irish author, although has spent half a century living in Hampshire UK. She is a hoarder of books as well as her children’s games and toys!

A day does not pass without her reading a book.

Career …

Elsie is a happily retired teacher but one who regularly misses her pupils, and loved teaching them all subjects, but especially computing of all kinds, as well as skipping rhymes in the playground.

She makes up for it by collecting her grandchildren from school and helping with homework and listening to the 5 year old read on weekdays. That’s before playing games, baking with them and sewing, too.

Elsie’s Books …

She has recently published a book about Skipping Rhymes from around the world, but admits a great number are from Ireland, having learnt and skipped them in her native Belfast in the 1950s and 1960s.

It was created in collaboration with her granddaughter, Jessica, who loves to skip, dance, sing, model and do TV adverts never mind find time for school work! Since attending secondary school homework has trebled!

Skipping Rhymes …

Not only does her e-book and paperback include a whole host of chants, rhymes and songs, but also the history of many of them from around the world.

It is divided into chapters which include those skipped during the plagues, for example ENZA, written about the Spanish ‘flu, from about 1918. In addition, there are speed rhymes and of course Irish ones, too. You can skip solo or with friends – try out Double Dutch!

Can you find the quip in Enza? What links does it have to Corona Virus and Covid-19?

More about Skipping Songs, Rhymes & Chants …

There are chapters on the origins of skipping, advice on buying ropes, exercises for beginners and those who can already skip, healthy eating and challenging yourself and friends. Try Double Dutch or Nelson if you would enjoy a challenge!

It is written in a chatty format with images of her grandchildren and friends actually carrying out the skipping. You can watch real children have fun, make a few mistakes like getting caught in the rope or laugh so much it is hard not to explode with them. Even better, you can link to Elsie’s You Tube channel and watch the children do their exercises and skip to a whole variety of songs in the book.

“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” – Roald Dahl
